Bucharest - Sector 6 Lake Morii
Lake Morii and its surroundings form District 6’s key demo area for creating and upgrading green spaces to improve residents’ quality of life. The zone includes the lakeshore parks and the island currently undergoing modernization—selected through a public design competition. The area is well connected to the city by Metro M1, tram 41 (surface-metro), and bus lines 178, 163, and 162, and is framed by predominantly residential buildings that have benefited from extensive energy-efficiency rehabilitations.

Beyond the lakeshore’s setting, the Lake Morii area brings a socially diverse community, including many young residents thanks to nearby campuses and strong transit links. Built in the communist era for flood control, it has become a much-loved venue for everyday recreation and city events, with walking, jogging, cycling, picnics, and nature access.
Key challenges include an underdeveloped island, litter and water quality issues, discontinuous paths and lighting, accessibility gaps, and event-time congestion—often compounded by limited participation from marginalized groups. Opportunities center on inclusive, co-designed regeneration: transforming the island into a signature leisure/cultural/nature spot; expanding trails, water-sports and flexible event spaces; and adding climate-smart upgrades (smart lighting, resilient landscapes). Urban furniture can be integrated along existing routes and parks—benches, shaded seating, bike racks, fountains, and fitness equipment—while addressing security and universal access.
Ongoing revitalization is supported by local partners such as the Green Revolution Association, environmental authorities, Ion Mincu University, the Romanian Association of Urban Planners, the Bucharest Community Foundation, and District 6 Municipality.
